Epithelial tissue Flashcards
This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
What is the definition of tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells performing similar functions.
The four types of tissue are:
- Muscle
- Nervous
- Connective
- Epithelial
All cells in the body belong to one of these 4 types of tissues.
Define Extracellular Matrix (EM)
Extracellualr Matrix (EM) is a substance produced by the cells of a specific tissue.
What does EM contain?
EM may contain:
Protein fibers Salts Water White blood cells Dissolved micromolecules
Where is EM located?
Outside the cells but within a tissue.
What tissue lines every body surface, body cavity and organs?
Epithelial Tissue
The majority of glands are derived from…
Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue possesses ___________ EM.
Little to no
Name the six characteristics of Epithelial tissue.
- Cellularity
- Polarity
- Attachment
- Avascularity
- Innervation
- Regeneration
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of cellularity?
Tightly bound cells with little to no EM.
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of polarity?
There is direction to the cells - it has Apical, Basal and Lateral sides.
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of attachment?
The cells are anchored to the basement membrane.
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of avascularity?
The tissue has no blood vessels.
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of innervation?
The tissue has nerve endings or receptors.
Define the epithelial tissue characteristic of regeneration?
The tissue’s cells are replaced as quickly as they are lost. This is called mitosis.
