Epithelium Flashcards
(18 cards)
Simple squamous epithelium
location: lining of vascular system, lining of body cavities, kidney (bowman’s capsule), lung
function: barrier, diffusion
Endothelium and Mesothelium are special types of simple squamous epithelium. Where are they each found?
Endothelium: blood vessels, heart
Mesothelium: body cavities (pericardial, peritoneal, plural)
Simple cuboidal epithelium
location: kidney (tubules), various ducts and glands
function: barrier, secretion, absorption
Simple columnar epithelium
location: GI tract, gallbladder (non-ciliated type); oviduct (ciliated type)
function: absorption, secretion, lubrication, transport
ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
location: trachea, bronchi
function: protection, movement
non-ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
location: epididymis
function: absorption
What is metaplasia?
Under the influence of certain factors, the respiratory epithelium can change into another type of epithelium. If the factors are removed, the epithelium might change back. Seen in smokers - loss of cilia results in accumulation of mucus
stratified squamos epithelium
location: skin (keratinized); oral cavity, esophagus, vagina (non-keratinized)
function: barrier, protection
stratified cuboidal epithelium
location: sweat gland ducts, some exocrine glands
function: barrier, conduit
stratified columnar epithelium
location: large ducts of glands ex: parotid
function: barrier, conduit
transitional epithelium
location: urinary system
function: protection, barrier
Endocrine grands secrete into ___ and ___, while exocrine glands secrete to the ___
blood; lymph; surface
In regards to exocrine glands, list the three mechanisms of secretion and how they work
holocrine: whole cell released
apocrine: release of vesicles
merocrine: exocytosis of molecules
Serous glands
location: pancreas, parotid salivary gland
function: produce proteins
note: they stain dark and have lots of RER
Mucous glands
location: brunner’s glands, goblet cells
function: produce mucins
note: they stain pale and have little RER
What is an example of a mixed (seromucous) gland
submandibular salivary gland
Goblet cells
unicellular glands; mucous secreting; found in intestine and respiratory tract
Carcinoma vs. Adenocarcinoma
carcinoma: from barrier epithelial tissue
adenocarcinoma: from glandular tissue
