Equilibrium Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is a reversible reaction
A reaction the products of the reaction can react with each other and can convert back to the original reactants. The reaction can go both ways
Give an example of a reversible reaction
Thermal decomposition of ammonium chloride
Ammonium chloride (white solid) breaks down into gases ammonia and hydrogen chloride during the forward reaction
Following cooling, the ammonia and hydrogen chloride react to form ammonium chloride during the backward reaction
NH4CL = NH3 + HCL
What is dynamic equilibrium
The state in a closed system where the concentrations of the reactants and products will reach a certain balance and stay there, and the reactions will carry on taking place in both directions at exactly the same rate but cancel each other out
How does changing temperature get more product
All reactions are exothermic in one direction and endothermic in the other
If temperature is raised the endothermic reaction will increase to absorb extra heat
If temperature is reduced the exothermic reaction will increase to give out more heat
How does changing pressure get more product
Most gaseous reaction have more moles of gas on one side than the other
If you raise the pressure it will encourage the reaction which produces fewer moles of gas
If you reduce the pressure it will encourage the reaction which produces more moles gas
