Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the rate of reaction
How fast the reactants are changed into products
Describe collision theory
The rate of reaction depends on the collision frequency of reacting particles, the more collisions, the faster that reaction is
There must be sufficient energy to break the bonds of the reactants (activation energy) for the reaction to be successful
How does increasing the temperature increase the rate of reaction
When temperature is increased, the particles move faster, so there are more collisions
There is also increased energy, this results in more successful collisions between the particles
How does increasing pressure increase the rate of reaction
There are more reactant particles in the same volume, this increases likelihood of successful collisions as well as collision frequency
How does increased surface area increase the rate of reaction
Increased surface area to volume ratio
Particles have an increase area to work on, so the collision frequency will increase
How does the presence of a catalyst increase the rate of reaction
A catalyst increases the rate of reaction without being used up
They decrease the activation energy for a reaction to occur
They do this by providing an alternative pathway that has lower activation energy
Therefore more particles have a sufficient amount of energy for successful collisions
