Equilibrium Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a reversible reaction
A reaction where the products of the reaction can react to produce the original reactants
What happens to the position of equilibrium when the temperature is increased
It shifts in the endothermic direction
Why is a reversible reaction put in a sealed container
So nothing can escape
What is dynamic equilibrium
The rate of the forwards reaction = the rate of the backwards reaction, so therefore the amount of the products is constant, so it appears like nothing is happening
Consider the reaction A + B <-> C
A = 10%
B = 30%
C = 60%
Which side is the position of equilibrium
Right
What happens to the position of equilibrium when the pressure is increased
The position of equilibrium shifts in the direction that produces fewer moles of gas
What happens to the position of equilibrium when the pressure is decreased
It moves towards the side that produces more moles of gas
What happens to the position of equilibrium when the temperature is decreased
It shifts in the exothermic direction
What is the effect of a catalyst on the position of equilibrium
Nothing - it speeds up the forwards and backwards reactions equally
