Equilibrium Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is dynamic equilibrium?
A state in a reversible reaction where the forward and backward reactions occur at the same rate, and the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant.
What are the conditions required for equilibrium?
A closed system and constant temperature.
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
If a change is made to a system at equilibrium, the system will shift to oppose the change and restore equilibrium.
How does increasing the concentration of a reactant affect equilibrium?
The equilibrium shifts to the right
How does increasing the pressure affect equilibrium in a gaseous system?
The equilibrium shifts to the side with fewer gas molecules.
How does increasing temperature affect an exothermic reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium shifts to the left
How does increasing temperature affect an endothermic reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium shifts to the right
What is the effect of a catalyst on equilibrium?
It speeds up both the forward and backward reactions equally but does not affect the position of equilibrium.
