Errors And Distrivution Curves Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a type 1 error
FALSE POSITIVE
-alternative hypothesis accepted
- null hypothesis rejected
This is a false positive as the null should have been accepted but it was rejected
What is a type 2 error
FALSE NEGATIVE
- alternative hypothesis rejected
- null hypothesis accepted
This is where the research is falsely negative and said that there is no significant difference or effect when there is
Which error type 1 or type 2 is most common is psychological research
A type 1 error is the most common error due to the fact that research is more likely to be published if it is stating that there is a significant effect
What is normal distribution
- where all measures of central tendency (mean, median + mode) all happen at the highest point in the curve
- expected from a normal target population
- most scores are around the midpoint then fewer and fewer are seen the further from the midpoint that you go
What is a positive skew distribution curve
- the population has more low scorers than high scorers
MEAN > MODE - curve moved to the left
- few people scored much higher than others
What is a negative skew distribution curve
MEAN < MODE
- curve moved to the right
- fewer people at the lower end and more people at the higher end
- few people scored much lower than others
What are the 3 factors needed to carry out a parametric inferential statistical tests
- normal distribution
- Interval level data
-low variance
