What is eschatology
The study of what will happen at the end of time
Bible teachings on eschatology
-At the end of time there will be cosmic disasters-stars will fall, sun will darken
-Jesus will return to earth to judge all humans
-The kingdom of God will be established.
Cosmic reconciliation eschatology
-Adam + Eve’s sin broke the harmony of creation-Jesus’ death restored it
-At the end of time the whole of creation will be made perfect

-People have free will to accept/reject God and God doesn’t send people to hell people send themselves.
-Advice-Follow Jesus’ teachings, keep faith in God, perform good actions, don’t commit moral sins.

-People choose through free will to enter heaven
-In heaven, God’s love removes all care and worries.

-Hell is the state of eternal separation from God.
-people in hell live in a state of frustration and anger at themselves.
What is purgatory
A cleansing process (not a place) in which the effects of sin are removed… there is some pain. However heaven is guaranteed.
Teachings from the parable of the rich man and lazarus
-Showing love and kindness to others will lead to heaven-the rich man went to hell as he didn’t help lazarus.
-Wealth can make it easy to forget the suffering and needs of others.
-It is not possible to move between heaven and hell.
-Faith in God and following Jesus’ teachings will lead to heaven.
What is euthanasia
Ending the life of someone who is suffering, with the aim of preventing more suffering. “Assisted suicide”.
What are countries views on euthanasia
Illegal in Britain
Legal in Canada, USA, Netherlands, Belgium etc.
Reasons why euthanasia should be legalised
-Can end the suffering people experience such as people with paralysis and their family.
-Death is an event in life, not the end of life (life after death).
-It can quickly and humanely end a persons suffering.
Why shouldn’t euthanasia be legalised
-Possibility of recovering
-Many pain killing drugs
-It devalues life and may be the first step on a slippery slope.

-Euthanasia is murder
-Only God has the right to take life (sanctity of life)
-All life should be respected and protected (sanctity of life)
-Body and soul need care and love.
What is the sacrament of the sick and commendation of the dying.
Sacrament of the sick-Anyone who is ill or going into surgery or old age.
Commendation of the dying-someone who is dying.
What 3 things are shown during the sacrament of the sick
-The room and patient is sprinkled by holy water-reminder of Baptism.
-Holy communion is given-The body of Christ provides strength.
-Priest lays hands on patient’s head-calls down the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual effects of the sacrament of the sick
-Reminds us that we share in Christ’s suffering-feel closer to Christ
-Gives us strength and courage to cope with our illness
-Our sins are forgiven
What happens in the commendation of the dying
-Short service where the person is dying
-Hears a reading and prayers
-holds a crucifix and repeats the promises made at their baptism.
-Receives Holy Communion to show that Christ is with them on their journey.

-Jesus will return to earth at the end of time and establish the kingdom of God.
-Jesus will physically raise all those who have died for judgement.
-If judged favourably the person will get the same body they lost at death in a perfect form.

-Body taken to the church in a coffin-represents going back to God
-Coffin is sprinkled with Holy Water-joined Jesus in Baptism now resurrection

-Priest offers comfort to relatives by allowing music, reading and prayer choice and a eulogy is said.
