et tissues (quiz 2) Flashcards
(22 cards)
4 main types of tissues
epitherial- 8
connective- 12
muscle- 3
nerve
first stages of embryological layers
1- ectoderm (outside)
2- mesoderm (middle)
3- endoderm (inside)
cilia
moves things across surface
-egg to fallopian tube
-smoking can effect the cilia
microvilli
helps absorb/secrete
ex: intestines
histology
study of tissues
epitherial tissue
-lines external/internal organs
-1st defense barrier
-cells make tight contact
1 layer
simple epiterial
2 or more layers
stratified
single layer that gives impression of more than 1 layer
pseudostratified
squamos
flat like pancake
cuboidal
perfectly round
columnar
long column looking
What is Simple Squamous Epithelium?
Single layer of flat cells.
-lines avioli of the lungs,
-makes up pericardium/pleura/ peritoneum
Allows diffusion and filtration; located in air sacs of lungs and blood vessel linings.
What is Simple Cuboidal Epithelium?
-Single layer of cube-shaped cells.
-absorbs/secretes
-lines kidneys
Functions in secretion and absorption; found in kidney tubules and glands.
What is Simple Columnar Epithelium?
-Single layer of tall, column-like cells;
-lines small/large intestine
-absorption/secretion
Functions in absorption and secretion of mucus and enzymes; located in digestive tract lining and gallbladder.
What is Pseudostratified ciliated
-found in trachea
-catches sweeps up dirt in air
Functions in secretion, especially mucus, and ciliary movement; found in trachea and upper respiratory tract.
What is Stratified Squamous Epithelium?
-offers most protection
-keratanized? in epidermis/top layer of skin
-nonkeratanzied? every entrance and exit area of the body (anus/ esophagus/mouth)
Protects underlying tissues in areas of abrasion; located in skin (keratinized), mouth, and esophagus (non-keratinized).
What is Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium?
-found in ducts of exocrine glands
-protection and secretion
-NEVER more than 3 layers
Functions in protection; found in sweat glands, mammary glands, and salivary glands.
exocrine gland
secretes hormones into blood stream, lots of blood vessels
-ovaries
endocrine glanol
secretes substances via a duct to surface
-sweat glands, saliva, semen, digestive
What is Stratified Columnar Epithelium?
not on test.
Functions in protection and secretion; located in male urethra and some glandular ducts.
What is Transitional Epithelium?
-5-10 layers
-ONLY found in urinary system
Stretches to allow urinary organ expansion; found in bladder, ureters, and part of urethra.
