What is Authority?
the legally granted right to issue commands or give direction to others
What is Bribe?
money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupt the behavior of a person or public official
What is Conflict of Interest?
a conflict between a person’s private interests and public obligations; a situation in which a public official’s decision are influenced by the official’s personal interests
What is Corruption?
inducement of a public official by improper means
What is Deception?
the act of misleading or state of being misled - something mislead or is intended to mislead
What is Dilemma?
a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives
What is Discretion?
the authorized capacity to make judgments and choose from among a variety of actions to resolve a problem within the limits of the law and Department policy
What is Ethics?
standards of principles of conduct governing a profession - the rules of conduct or duty
What is a Gift?
a thing given willingly to someone without payment, a present
What is a Graft?
the acquisition of money, gain or advantage by dishonest, unfair, or illegal means through abuse of one’s position or influence
What is Integrity?
soundness of moral principles; the character of uncorrupted virtue; uprightness, honesty, self-control, courage, compassion
What is Malfeasance?
an action that is always unjustified, never allowed, and legally cannot do
the performance by a public official of an act that is legally unjustified, harmful or contrary to the law, intentional commission of a prohibited act
What is Misfeasance?
lawfully can act but performed wrongly
the wrongful performance of a normally lawful act: the wrongful and injurious exercise of lawful authority; performance that one is obligated or permitted to do in a manner which is improper, sloppy or negligence
What is Misconduct?
behavior not conforming to prevailing standards of laws impropriety, wrongdoing, violations department rules and procedures

capability of distinguishing between right and wrong; conduct or behavior with regard to right and wrong
What is Public Trust?
exercising public authority within the legal limits and according to the ends for which it was created

something given in return or recompense for meritorious service in the public interest

exercises of authority are grounded in published principles or laws enacted by a duty authorized official - authority is not based on the self-interest of an individual

principles, standards or qualities considered worthwhile or desirable

expected to strictly adhere to the highest standard of integrity - will not lie, cheat, steal, conspire to deceive or evade the truth - must conduct at all times in a completely honest and forthright manner

the use of words, ideas, concepts, or work of another, without proper acknowledgement, constitutes plagiarism

that the use of the word “shall” means the individual must obey, does not have discretion, cannot deviate
