- Identify and locate criminal activity
- Apprehend suspects who we have probable cause to believe committed a crime
- Participate in subsequent court proceedings following arrests, indictments, or summons
- Reduce opportunities for the commission of crimes through preventive patrol

- Basic Patrol

What is Basic Patrol?
the most common type where officers are responsible for patrolling a defined beat, zone, or district
What are the categories and % breakdown of Basic Patrol?
Responding to calls for service (25%)
Preventing crime through high visibility (40%)
Self-initiated activities (15%)
Administrative tasks (20%)
What is Directed Patrol?
To focus agency resources on places, people and times where an increased risk of crime has been identified
What is the breakdown of Directed Patrol?
Statistics: analysis of trends to identify high risk areas
Targeted: deploy resources in precise locations, during precise times and using strategic methods
Data Collection: determine how effective directed patrol was at solving the problem
What is Specialized Patrol?
Includes uniform and plain clothes assignments for surveillance or supporting other department personnel with specific investigations and events
What is the breakdown of Specialized Patrol?
a) Have badge and identification readily available or visible for immediate inspection
b) communicate location and clothing description to uniform officers
c) always yield to or follow uniform officer instructions and verbally identify self to all person on the scene and arriving officers

What is the Watchman style of policing?
the ultimate intent is to maintain order rather than to regulate behavior - ignoring minor offenses and tolerating minor misbehavior is standard
What is the Legalistic style of policing?
the strict adherence to the law is emphasized - officers are expected to exercise little discretion and follow the letter of the law
What is the Service style of policing?
to take all calls seriously and usually doesn’t impose formal sanctions - officer will intervene but does so in an informal manner
What are all the different types of patrol?
Automobile, foot patrol/walking beat, motorcycle, mounted patrol, canine, bicycle, harbor patrol, undercover/plain clothes
What are the 3 policing strategies?
- Aggressive Patrol
- Random Patrol

What is Aggressive Patrol?
the emphasis on positive, target oriented activities - this may include observations and stopping to conduct an FIOE of a suspicious person
What is Random Patrol?
the officer varies his/her patrol pattern and becomes unpredictable - if you become predictable criminal will know your routine
What is Direct Deterrent Patrol?
the officer utilizes crime analysis numbers gathered through information from community police programs, merchants, residents, and community leaders - based on crime analysis may take calls from specific location to bring down a trend in break and entering in the area
