Ethnic inequality - New right Explanations Flashcards
(12 cards)
What did 16% of “White gypsy or Irish traveller’s” say?
they were disabled and “limited a lot” in their daily activities by a long-term physical or mental health condition.

had “any other Black, Black British or Caribbean background” at 9.3%.
What percentage of England and Wales lived in social rented housing and who was this more common amongst?
17% and more common among people who identified as “Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African”.
What did Murray (1984) focus on?
The US government that provided welfare benefits for groups of people such as the unemployed, lone parents, creating a dependency culture on the state
What did Murray want to occur?
Reduced benefits for the under class, Less government intervention to reduce poverty, Unemployment and single parent families need to be encouraged to stop relying on support from the state.
What are the advantages of the research by murray?
- Margaret Thatcher supported it but this increased the gap between rich and poor
- Holistic theory that connects to functionalism and right realism
What did Sewell study?
Black masculinity and schooling, Afro Caribbean boys aged 11-16 years of age in a Comprehensive School in the UK.
What did Sewell note about his study?
- Afro Caribbean’s are twice as likely than White people to have a single parent family headed by a female
- These boys were very vulnerable to peer group pressure
- displayed macho forms of masculinity, wanted respect and often rejected authority figures like teachers and the police.
What was the subculture of black masculinity?
a comfort zone for these young males who had been rejected by their absent fathers and the education system. In school, these boys adopted the qualities of black masculinity which lead to the boys opposing teacher authority and rejecting academic achievement. It was found that 18% of Afro Caribbean boys adopted the anti-school subculture.
Thiel (2007)
- Conducted an ethnographic study on a London building site
- Participant observation used for one year
- Working class culture was observed alongside ethnicity
What did Thiel find?
- An ethnic hierarchy existed in the labour force
- Sub-contractors employed men from their own community and ethnicity (and they rarely employed men from outside of their ethnic community)
- Carpenters = Indian ethnicity, Labourers = Irish ethnicity, Plasterers = Seychelles, Managers = White British
What did the findings from Thiel mean?
- migrant workers from outside of these ethnic groups were rarely employed even if they could work hard for less pay
- If migrant workers were employed they were the first to get fired if the demand for work reduced (racism amongst different ethnic groups)
- This affected employment opportunities and economic power of ethnic groups in the labour marke
