Evalaution Of Developmental Area Flashcards
(11 cards)
Developmental Area principles:
1) Behaviour changes from conception through to death
2) these behaviour changes influenced by biological stages or by external influences
Nature or nurture ?
Nature - innate behaviour changes through biological stages in development and or by external influences
Nurture - influenced by biological stages such as age
Deterministic or free will?
Deterministic - suggests that changes in behaviour are result of biological stages and/or external influences therefore people do not have a choice over behaviour
Individual or situational
Both - behaviour is from both external influences and biological stages. So environment and things within a person
Useful?
Useful as it explains the role of external influences on development, the developmental area is helpful to make applications on improving behaviour
Socially sensitive?
Causes controversy - if factors are out of control then behaviour is a product of biological stages and or external factors raises questions if people should be held responsible
Reductionist or holistic ?
Holistic - recognises how multiple factors shape development such as biological influences and biological
Ethical or not
Ethical as it only asks questions however may be unethical if they are unaware of observation. Uses children which could violate ethical guidelines.
Scientific or not
Yes as it uses hypothesis testing and quantitative data. However some uses self report which could be weak as can be unscientific
Strength of developmental area
Strength : contributes to knowledge of nature and nurture debate and considers how both innate and environmental factors can influence our behaviour as we develop. Holistic.
2) Pratical applications such as teaching children.
Weakness of developmental area
1) Deterministic as it considered that behaviour is outside the control of the individual of the individual rather than chosen. Provides negative behaviours.
2) unethical - no protection from harm as it often uses young children and puts them in stressful situations.
