Evaluation Of Cognitive Area Flashcards
(10 cards)
Principles:
1);Behaviour is a result of information processing and we actively process the information around us through experiences,
2) Coginitve area cannot be observed therefore we deduce behaviour from observing how other people choose to behave in certain situations.
Determinism or Freewill?
Freewill - We have the Freewill to decide what outcome we want after processing information around us, active agents.
However can be deterministic as our internal processes are out of control.
Nature or Nature
Interactionist approach - some cognitive processes are innate
Reductionist or holistic
Reductionist as some people think only cognitive processes help behaviour not biological or social.
Individual or situational
Both as individually our thoughts and processes and how we communicate is internal.
Situational as our experiences and what we take in are external use.
Useful?
Labelling people as some may lead to mistypes and stereotypes. As in stereotype of victim eye witness is social sensitive as impacted people.
Scientific or not ?
Yes as there is hypothesis testing and level of controls and standardised instruction
Ethical or not
Ethical as some were debriefed and gained consent. And right to withdraw.
Strengths of cognitive area-
1) Useful to psychology as it enchanted knowldege of how information processing affects important parts of behaviour like memory and attention
2) highly scientific - controlled lab experiments that shows better cognitive processes
Weaknesses of cognitive area
1) reductionist - only considers the role information processing has on behaviour and doesn’t consider the role our physiology may play in behaviour
2) usefulness is limited as lab based research to be able to measure cognitive researches, so lowers ecological validity.
