(6 cards)
Doesn’t need reform: democracy
The hol reform act
In 1997 labour removed all by 92 hereditary peers, replaced by life peers who were appointed for notable acts of service
This increases democracy as there are a wider range of experiences and backgrounds in the hol where descisions for the people are ade
Needs reform: democracy
The life peers are still unelected and there are still 92 hereditary peers
An example of a life peer is lord strathclyde who inherited the title from his father
Even though he was unelected he was given many opportunities to represent those who didn’t vote for him, like becoming the leader of the cons party
Doesn’t need reform: decentralisation of power
Devolution act decentralised power from wm to devolved assemblies
For example Scotland had power over tax and transport in the Scotland act 2016
Needs reform: decentralisation of power
The power can easily be taken away because majority of power lies with Westminster
This was shown in 2020 where bojo repealed the fpta giving power back to him when choosing election dates rather than mps
Doesn’t need reform: protection of rights
Constituational reform act 2005/06 lead to the establishment of the Supreme Court
Rights are protected and not influenced by politicians
Needs reform : protection of rights
The judges who serve to protect these rights are appointed by the pm and monarch which creates concerns
