Paragraph 1 disagree leadership
P- voters will prefer someone with experience and strong.
Nichola Sturgeon, strong leader who increased popularity of the SNP.
E- SNP won 56/59 Westminster seats in 2015. It became 3rd largest party in UK + since Sturgeon resigned there has been a decline in influence.
Counter- Although Thatcher was a strong leader as she had strong beliefs in free market economics and she implemented a series of policies known as ‘Thatcherism’, her strong leadership led to people rebelling mad disagreeing with her ideas.
Disagree unity is more important
P- Disunited party has no chance of being elected.
E-1980s, conservatives were united around Thatcher leadership while Labour split between left and right wings. Labour ended up splitting 1981 whilst the conservatives had 2 huge victories in 1983 and 1987 general elections.
Furthermore, conservatives were recently divided as Sunak struggled to gain support from right-wing factions of the party.
A- this shows a disunited party (sunaks) is less likely to be successful.
Unity crucial ensures strong support from voters. Division makes it hard to appeal to a broad electorate.
Counter- media influence can play a far greater role. Thatcher in the early 1980s faced great opposition; disunited party including ‘wets’ in her own cabinet. She still pushed ahead with major reforms. E.g. I however it could be that this argument is weak as at the start of the 1980s, Thatcher had opposition in her own cabinet ‘wets’
