evaluation of multi store model Flashcards

1
Q

strength

A

supporting research evidence that shows that STM and LTM are indeed very different
- Baddeley found out that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when we are using our STM memories
(can also talk about Peterson, Miller etc and how there are clinical case studies such as case of HM which used brain scans)

Q

weakness

A
  • too simplistic
  • the MSM states STM is a unitary (single system), so there’s only one type of STM
  • however, evidence from people who suffer from amnesia shows this can’t be true, many studies show that there could be another STM store for non verbal sounds like noises THEREFORE BADDELEY AND HITCH DEVELOPED WMM

Q

weakness

A
  • MSM states what matters in rehearsal is how many times you do it, however, a researcher found out that what matters is TYPE
  • they discovered there are two types of rehearsal

Q

what are the two types of rehearsal

A

maintenance (described in STM but doesn’t transfer to LTM)

Elaborative- needed for long term storage, occurs when you link info to existing knowledge

Q

limitation of both MSM and WMM

A

machine reductionism, doesn’t look at holistic factors and memory in everyday life
