Evaluation Of The Multi-store Memory Model Flashcards
(5 cards)
Research support- Glanzer and Cunitz
P- One strength of the MSM is that there is research support.
E- Glanzer and Cunitz provide evidence for the two different memory stores. For example, the primacy effect shows how memory is stored in the LTM and the recency shows how it’s stored in the LTM.
E- This supports the MSM and increases validity.
Baddeley (1966)
P- One store is the MSM is that there is research support for different memory stores e.g. STM and LTM.
E- Baddeley suggests that short term memory is stored acoustically whilst long term memory is stored semantically.
E- This therefore supports the MSM and increases the validity.
Quality of research
P- Despite there being research support, the quality of this research has come into question.
E- Both studies use the artificial word list, which can not be applied to real life.
E- This shows that the tasks in both studies do not reflect memory memory accessing in day to day life and this can not be applied outside of research, decreasing the usefulness.
Research refuting
P- A limitation of the MSM is that the is research refuting.
E- Warrington studied a client they referred to as KF who had a clinical disorder called amnesia. KFs STM for digits was very poor when read aloud to him. But his recall was much better when he read the digits to himself. This study shows there could be another STM store for non-verbal sounds.
E- This suggests that the STM is much more complex than the MSM shows. This therefore decreases credibility.
Tulving
P- A further limitation is stutter research refuting.
E- Tulving suggested that there are three different types of LTM. Tulving was one of the earliest psychologists to suggest that due to these different types of LTM there must be three LTM stores.
E- This rejects the idea of rehearsal in the LTM and that it is much more complex.
