(23 cards)
what type of neuron carries impulses AWAY from the CNS to muscles and glands.
motor neurons
what neurons carry information between sensory and motor neurons
Interneurons
What is a synapse?
Junction between two neurons or between a neuron and a receptor.
what does the cerebrum do
conscious thought and actions, sensory perception and memory.
what do mechanoreceptors do
detetect stimuli such as touch, pressure, sound
what do chemoreceptos do
detecte taste and sense of smell
what photoreceptors do?
too see color and light
CNS
main control center of the body that processes info and coordinates responses
Peripheral central nervous
Network of nerves that connects the cns to the rest of the body.
what is the somatic nervous system?
Part of the peripheral nervous system- somatic controls voluntary movements.
what is the autonomic nervous system?
Part of the peripheral nervous system- controls involuntary functions like e.g blinking
sympathetic nervous system?
prepares body for high energy activity- flight or fight- increasing heart rate and blood to muscles.
parasympathetic nervous system?
returns the body back to normal after the sympathetic nervous system reacts.
homeostasis?
A state of balance among all body systems needed for the functions to work correctly- controls ph levels, hydration and temp.
myelin
protects the axon and helps messages to be transmitted quickly.
where is the Axon terminal
At the end of branches
terminal button?
Small sac that stores neuro transmitters
axon
carry electrical impulses to communicate with the brain
neurotransmitter
chemical that assist in giving info from one neuron
vesicles
the sacs that fuse with membranes of the axon and release neurotransmitters into the synapse
what does cerebullum do?
coordinates movement, balance and posture
what does brainstem do?
connects the brain to the spinal cord, control vital functions like breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure,
