What was the Cold War?
A long conflict between the U.S. and the USSR without fighting.
What was the Red Scare?
Fear of communism spreading in countries like Canada and the U.S.
What was the Gouzenko Affair?
A Soviet spy defected in Canada and revealed spying, starting the Red Scare here.
What was the Warsaw Pact?
A group of communist countries that also agreed to protect each other.
Why were NATO and the Warsaw Pact rivals?
Because they were on opposite sides of the Cold War (West vs. East).
What was the Cuban Missile Crisis?
a major confrontation in 1962 that brought the United States and the Soviet Union close to war, when Soviet nuclear missiles were secretly placed in Cuba.

John Difenbaker hesitated to put Canada on high alert, but eventually cooperated with Nato and supported the U.S.
What was the Suez Crisis?
Egypt took control of the Suez Canal, and other countries attacked.

Canada (Lester Pearson) suggested peacekeeping to stop the fighting.

North Korea invaded South Korea.

Saddam Hussein, leader of Iraq, sent his army to invade Kuwait. He wanted Kuwait’s oil and more power in the region.

Canada joined the fight with other countries to help free Kuwait from Iraq.
