Events, Sample Spaces and Probability Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is an experiment in statistics?
An act or process of observation that leads to a single outcome that cannot be predicted with certainty.
What is a sample point/simple event?
The most basic outcome of an experiment.
What is a sample space?
The collection of all of an experiment’s sample points.
State the law of large numbers.
The relative frequency of the number of times that an outcome occurs when an experiment is replicated over and over again approaches the true or theoretical probability of the outcome.
List the probability rules for sample points.
Let pi represent the probability of sample point i. Then,
1. All sample point probabilities must lie between zero and one.
2. The probabilities of all sample points in a sample space must add to one.
What is an event?
A specific collection of sample points.
How do you calculate the probability of an event A?
Sum the probabilities of the sample points in the sample space for A.
Outline the process used to determine the probability of an event in an experiment.
Define the experiment; that is, describe the process used to make an observation and the type of observation that will be recorded.
List the sample points.
Assign probabilities to the sample points.
Determine the collection of sample points contained in the event of interest.
Sum the sample point probabilities to get the probability of the event.
What is the combinations rule?
Not needed for TT1
