Evidence of Evolution Flashcards
(17 cards)
The only direct evidence we have for evolution
Fossils
Embryology
The study of organisms in the early stages of development
Homologous structures
Similar structural make-up but differ in function
Analogous structures
Similar functions but different structures
Vestigial structures
Underdeveloped structures that are seemingly useless in one organism but may be functional in another
Physiology
Studies of the function of any part of an organism & how the parts interact to support life
Biochemical Evidence
Analysis and comparison of proteins and DNA
Biogeography
The study of where and why organisms live where they do/the geographical distribution of plants and animals
Examples of homologous structures
Whale fin, bat wing, human arm
Examples of analogous structures
Insect’s wing, bird’s wing (both for flying)
Examples of vestigial structures
Appendix, tailbone, ear muscles (in humans)
Examples of physiology
Wastes of birds and reptiles
What can affect biogeography?
Climate and isolation
What can embryos suggest?
A degree of relatedness, because the longer they look alike, the more closely related they are to
Oceanic Islands
Have always been isolated from the mainland
Landbridge islands
Were once connected to the mainland
How do organisms get to islands?
Fly, Swim, Rafting, Hitching a ride, Ice or land bridges
