- New species
What is Lamark’s theory?
Inheritance of acquired characteristics (use and disuse)
What is Darwin’s theory?
Natural selection
L1. A changing environment
Creates a need for certain features to be developed in order to survive
L2. Acquired characteristics
Through use or disuse, those features needed for survival are developed in each individual
L3. Inheritance
Those characteristics developed by individuals are somehow passed onto their offspring
L4. New species
Eventually, over many generations, enough differences have developed that we can say we have a new species
D1. Overproduction of offspring
More offspring produced than will survive
D2. Struggle for existence
Competition within species for food, habitat, and survival from being eaten
D3. Genetic variation
Heritable features must vary from individual to individual
D4. Survival of the fittest
Those with better traits tend to survive longer and produce more offspring; these are the “naturally selected”
D5. New Species
When the traits of a population differ from the earlier ones and can no longer reproduce with them
