Evolution Flashcards
What is the theory of evolution
All of today’s species have evolved from simple life forms that first started to develop over three billion years ago
What is the ‘survival of the fittest’
The organisms with the most suitable characteristics for the environment would be more successful competitors and would be more likely to survive
What happens to the successful organisms that survive
More likely to reproduce and pass on their genes to their offspring
What happens to the organisms that are less well adapted
Less likely to survive and reproduce
So less likely to pass on their genes to the next generation
What happens overtime (when the more adpated ones reproduce more)?
Beneficial characteristics become more common in the population causing evolution
Why was Darwin’s theory not perfect?
UwU Charles Darwin san
Relevant scientific knowledge wasn’t available at the time- he couldn’t give a good explanation for why new characteristics appeared
Why do new phenotypic variations occur
Because genetic variants produced by mutations-changes in DNA-
What is speciation
When the phenotype of organisms change so much because of natural selection that a completely new species forms
When does speciation occur
When populations of the same species change enough to become reproductively isolated(cant inbreed to produce fertile offspring)
