Evolution - Natural And Artificial Selection Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is natural selection?
the process by which characteristics of a population change over many generations as organisms with advantageous traits survive and reproduce, passing their traits to offspring
How does natural selection occur?
Occurs because individuals with certain inherited traits are better able to survive specific local environmental conditions and, through reproduction, pass on their alleles to their offspring.
These individuals tend to produce more offspring
What does natural selection require?
diversity or variation in a species.
What is selective pressure?
- Environmental conditions that select for certain characteristics of individuals and select against other characteristics
- Can be biotic or abiotic
Selective pressure + diversity =?
Natural selection
What is the rock pocket mouse an example of. Explain.
Natural selection. Dark mouse lives on dark rock and light mouse lives on light rock. If they live on contrasting rock, they do not survive and not able to reproduce
What is artificial selection?
Selective pressure exerted by humans on
populations in order to improve or modify
particular desirable traits
Name some examples of artificial selection
- Corgi dogs
- Shorter fruit trees
- Milk production
- Juicier oranges
Give an example of selective pressure
Peppered moth
Antibiotic resistant bacteria
Animals in cold regions thicker fur
Describe the process of artificial selection
- People “choose” which traits are adaptive.
2 organisms with these traits allowed to Reproduce
