Evolution - Variation And Adaptation Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is evolution?
Evolution is the process of biological change over time based on the relationships between species and their environments.
What is variation?
Structural, functional or physiological differences between individuals
Why is variation important
- The environment is not constant, some variations are helpful and some not, based on what that change looks like
2.the variation will allow the species to survive the change - a frequent variation will become a “trait” of a population (eg. Birds have wings)
How does variation occur?
Sexual reproduction, mutation
What is an adaptation?
A structure, behaviour or physiological process that helps an organism survive and reproduce.
What is a mutation?
1.the only source of new genetic variations
2. Permanent change in the genetic material of an organism
What is selective advantage?
a genetic advantage that improves an organism’s chances of survival, usually in a changing environment.
What is an example of structural adaptation?
Snow leopard - short legs and long tail to balance and run
What is an example of physiological adaptation?
Monarch bad tasting
What is an example of behavioural adaptation?
Puff adders. Step on them, they don’t move
What is Mimicry?
evolutionary adaptation where one organism (the mimic) resembles another organism (the model) in some way, often to deceive a third organism (the dupe).
What is an example of mimicry?
Monarch butterfly
What is the peppered moth an example of?
Industrial melanism
