What are the five ways of defining philosophy?
- First discipline: asks basic questions
- Love of wisdom
- Rational analysis: uses reason to distinguish and identify
- Examined life: question yourself and your values
- Developing a world view: goes with examined life
Three main branches of Philosophy? What question do they ask?
- Epistemology: how do we know?
- Metaphysics: what is real?
- Ethics: what ought I to do?
In what ways is Philosophy considered the first discipline?
It asks the most basic questions and is the foundation as you build on philosophical assumptions and assume answers to the questions in the three branches
Explain Philosophy as the love of knowledge
Philo means love and soph means knowledge
Explain Philosophy as rational analysis
Uses reasons to properly identify and distinguish what a thing is (concept)

Begins with the question: what does that mean?
What is the examined life?
- Socrates said “the unexamined life is not worth living”.
- It’s identifying ones own views with regard to whether and how we know
- Concerned with becoming more and more aware
What is Philosophy as a world view?
Provides us with a Philosophy of life. The more conscious we are the better off we are because we can start to answer the most basic questions
How is reason defined? Explain.
