Nouns and Article

  • Most nouns ending in - o are masculine (example: amigo) and nouns ending in –ema are masculine.
  • Most nouns ending in – a are feminine (example: amiga), noun ending in –ad and –ión are also feminine (example: la canción and la edad)
  • Most masculine nouns ending in a consonant just add –a to form the feminine (example: professor/ profesora)
  • Certain nouns use the same form for masculine and feminine, but the article will show the gender (example: el estudiante/ la estudiante)
  • Nouns that end in a vowel form the plural by adding –s (example: libro/ libros)
  • Nouns that end in a consonant add –es (example: reloj/relojes)
  • Nouns that end in a –z change the z to c in the plural (example: lápiz / lápices)
  • When the last syllable of a word that ends in a consonant has an accent mark, the accent is no longer needed in the plural (sección/ secciones)

Adjective Form, Position, and Agreement

  • Adjectives agree in gender an number with the noun they modify and usually follow the noun ( la profesora es dominicana)
  • Adjectives whose masculine form ends in – o have a feminine form that ends in – a (dominicano/ dominicana)
  • Adjectives whose masculine form ends in a consonant or – e have the same masculine and feminine forms ( un lápiz azul / una mesa azul)
  • For adjectives of nationality that end in a consonant, and adjectives that end in – dor, you must add – a to form the feminine. If the masculine has an accented final syllable, the accent is dropped in the feminine and the plural forms

  • *Definite articles:** la, las, el, los (the)
    ejemplo: la niña, las niñas, el niño, los niños

  • *Indefinite articles:** un, una, unas, unos (a, an, some)
    ejemplo: un libro, una mesa, unas mesas, unos libros

*The difference between the definite and indefinite articles is the difference between talking about a specific cat, or any cat at all.

expresses:
a state or condition
geographic or physical location

La manzana está verde.
The apple is unripe (verde = unripe)

  • *Estoy** enfermo.
  • I am sick.*

La Facultad de Educatión está detrás de la biblioteca.
The school of education is behind the library.

Ser (to be)
soy, eres, es, somos, son

expresses:
essential qualities
materials something is made of
place of orgin
nationality
the hour, day, date
where an event is taking place
religious or political affiliation

La manzana es verde.
The apple is green. (verde = green apple)

  • *Soy** de España.
  • I am from Spain.*

voy, vas, va, vamos, van

ir + a + infinitive is used to refer future action.
(to be going to [do something] + infinitive)

  • *Voy a estudiar** en la biblioteca maña.
  • I’m going to study in the library tomorrow.*

¿Cuántas clases vas a llevar este semestre?
How many classes are you going to take this semester?

  • *Vamos a mirar** un video en la clase de español.
  • We’re going to see a video in Spanish class.*

tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tienen

Tener is used to express possession

  • *Tengo** 23 años.
  • I am 23 years old.*

¿Tienes una familia grande?
Do you have a big family?

Another form to express possession is by using the construction: noun + de + noun.

To conjugate regular -ar verbs, simply drop the ending (-ar) and add one of the following:
o, as, a, amos, an

Hablar (to speak)
(yo) hablo
(tú) hablas
(él,/ella/ Ud.) habla
(nosotros/as) hablamos
(ellos/as/uds.) hablan

Ejemplo: Yo hablo en la clase. (hablar)

  • **Qué** is always used when asking for a definition or explanation.
  • **Cuál** is used in front of es or any other conjugation of ser for all other purposes.

Contractions

When the prepositions a and de are followed by the definite article el, contractions are required.

  • a + el = al** (to the*)
  • de + el = del** (of, from the*)

The other definite articles (la, los, las) do not form this contraction: a la, de los, a las and so on.
