Incarnation
When the Son of God became a human being while remaining fully God
Docetism
(Jesus is fully God but not fully human) To seem; to appear -a form of dualism - all existence is either spirit (good) or matter (evil) -God (spirit) would never become matter -Jesus appeared human, but wasn’t -denial of Jesus’ flesh
Apollinarianism
(Jesus is fully God but not fully human)
- Jesus did have a fleshy body but didn’t have a human soul/mind
- his body was powered by the divine logos (word)
Arianism
(Jesus is fully human but not fully God)
- God the father made God the son
- there was a time when the Son did not exist and when God was not Father
- the Son is an intermediary between God the Father and humanity
- the son is not equal to the father
- the son’s substance is not the same as the father’s substance

Theories of atonement
- Christ the victor theory
- Satisfaction theory
- Penal substitution theory
- Moral influence theory
Christ the victory theory
- Irenaeus - 2nd century
- Jesus has won a victory over satan, sin and death
- Jesus goes into the deepest stronghold of satan and sin-death -there he wins a battle and comes out victorious
- Jesus gains victory over the forces of evil by his willingness to go into death and his ability to come out of death
Satisfaction theory
-Anselm - 11th century
-humanity’s relationship with God is like a lord and vassal
-humanity has not obeyed God
-God must either punish humanity or satisfaction must be made
-humanity cannot make satisfaction for itself
-God actually loves us so he makes a way for satisfaction
•the Son of God becomes human-Jesus
•Jesus, as a human, gives perfect obedience to God
•Jesus willingly dies in our place - extra meritorious act
•Jesus gives his extra to us - satisfaction
Penal substitution theory
- John Calvin
- 16th century
- humanity owes obedience to God but doesn’t give it
- sin must be punished
- God knows that humanity can’t survive the destruction
- God loves humanity, so he provides a substitute- Jesus Christ
- because Jesus is fully human, he can take our place
- because Jesus is fully God, he can survive the destruction of sin
- Old Testament sacrificial system
Moral influence theory
- Abelard - 11th/12th century
- God demonstrates his love for us by sending his son to suffer and die for us
- Jesus’ death calls us to love God back and to love others as he loves us
The HS in Life with God
- immanent trinity
- the Holy Spirit is the uniting and consummating love of the trinity
- the energy of the life of communion and the gift of eternal love and friendship
- God the Holy Spirit is the love that binds together (connects) God the father and God the son
- in the life of the trinity the Holy Spirit is doing the work of connection
The Holy Spirit in life with humanity
- economic trinity
- connects us to God
- helps us pray
- freedom to love God and our neighbor
- spiritual gifts
- assurance of salvation
- if the holy spiritual is the connector in his work for us, then he is also the connector in the life of the trinity. Who god is in his work is who god is in his being
