Exam 2 Energy Production Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is metabolism
Sum of all chemical processes needed to maintain body
What is metabolic rate
Rate at which your body uses energy
What is glucose
- simple sugar that use created by broken down carbs
- used to fuel ATP
What is glycogen
- stored form of glucose
- complex carb
Stored in liver and skeletal muscles - stored as fat if its not needed
What is ATP
The energy source for all cellular processes
- produced by mitochondria
Explain the immediate system and limiting factors
- gets tired quick (0-10s)
- high intensity activities
- ATP rate = immediate
- fuel = ATP and creatine
- no oxygen used
Limiting factors:
1. Limited supply of ATP and creatine
Explain the non-oxidative system and limiting factors
- gets tired kinda fast (10s -2min)
- moderate- high intensity activities
- rate of ATP= quick
- fuel = glucose + glycogen
- no oxygen
Limiting factors
1. Limited supply of glucose and glycogen
2. Lactic acid
Explain the Oxidative system and limiting factors
- doesnt get tired fast
- low intensity activities
- slow rate of atp
- fuel = glycogen, glucose, fats protein
- oxygen
Limiting factors
1. Glycogen depletion
2. VO2 max can only be so high
Vo2max
Highest rate of oxygen consumption a person is capable of during max PA
How does being less fit effect energy production
- Can’t deliver o2 and fuel to muscles very good
- Can’t burn as many cals during or after exercise
- Can’t cope with lactate
