Exam 2: Pedigree Analysis and Genetic Counseling Flashcards
(9 cards)
Why are humans hard to study genetics on?
No controlled mating, long generation time, and smaller family sizes
Autosomal recessive Pedigree Pattern
Unaffected parents have affected children and tends to skip generations
Autosomal dominant Pedigree Pattern
At least one parent is affected when passing the trait on to thier opffspring
X-linked recessive Pedigree Pattern
Male is affected but father is not. Males are affected more often than females.
X-linked Dominant Pedigree Pattern
Does not skip generations. Biased towards women. Affected fathers will have all affected daughters and mother carriers will pass on the trait 1/2 the time
Genetic Counseling
Gives info about genetic conditions and is non-directed. Helps with interpreting genetic risk, medical implications, mode of inheritance, and reproductive options
CVS
Can be done earlier around 10th-12th week of pregnancy and can give instant results, but is more invasive
Amniocentesis
Has to be done later around 15th-18th week of pregnancy and cells must be cultured which takes longer for results to come back but less invasive
