Exam 3 ch 14 rate laws Flashcards
(15 cards)
Rate
Change in concentration of a reactant or product over time
Rate = ^[X] / ^t
Stoichiometry and coefficients
Stoichiometry: How much are being reacted
Exponents: How much the reactant matters to the speed
Stoich isnt the exponents for overall reactions
Instantaneous rate
-Rate at a specific point in time
-Slope of tangent
- Draw tangent
- Pick 2 points on tangent
- Point 2 - Point 1 / time 2 - time 1
Initial rate
-Rate at time 0
-When the reaction is the fastest
-Slope of tangent at time 0
Average rate
-Rate over a time period
-Slope of line
rate = C2 - C1 / t2 - t1
Units of rate constant
Rate = M/s
-Add exponents
M/ M^x s
-Cancle 1 M
1/ M^y s or M - y -s
Units of rate constant and overall order
If written normally : M-s- , add exponents
If written inverse: Add 1 to the M exponent
Rate of appearance/disappearance of one species to another
-Stoichiometric coefficients
-Reactants negative
-Products positive
-Directly one species to another you use regular stoichiometry
-if its the whole reaction you use stoichiometry to 1
Rate law m = 1
doubling concentration doubles rate
directly related
Rate law m = 2
doubling concentration quadrupled rate
Rate law m = 0
Rate is independent of concentration
No change regardless
Rate law m = negative
Rate decreases as concentration increases
Rate law inspections
-Finding A: Keep B constant
-Finding B: Keep A Constant
-Find the relationship between numbers
d Rate = d conc ^x
Determining k
-Use 1 trial and plug in numbers with known coefficients
Rate law logarithms
Rate 2 / Rate 1 = k[x]^ (2) / k[x]^ (1)
