Counseling definition
effective communication between a pharmacist
and a patient concerning the contents, drug to drug interactions, route, dosage, form, directions for use, precautions, and effective use of a drug or device
Drug Regimen Review (DRR)
retrospective, concurrent, and prospective review by a pharmacist of prescriptions or drug orders:
- For allergies, contradictions, appropriate use, and duplicative therapies
- For interactions
- For ADRs
- For proper utilization

- “Pharmacy” is a space. “The practice of pharmacy” is the description of the profession and what pharmacists may do.
- Pharmacists may independently administer medications
- “The practice of pharmacy” allows pharmacists to perform any acts authorized under IC 25-26, so long as they pertain to a patient’s pharmacy related care

means a distinct service or group of services that optimize

- formulating treatment plans
- selecting/modifying med therapy
- monitoring response to therapy
- medication review
- documentation of health care

Qualifying pharmacist definition
the pharmacist who will qualify the pharmacy by being responsible to the board for the legal operations of
the pharmacy under the permit
Indiana board of pharmacy
Made up of 7 members
- One member to represent the general public, who is not at all related to pharmacy
- Five members who are pharmacists (at least one practicing hospital pharmacist)
- One member who is a pharmacy technician
The Board may:
- Adopt rules (Indiana Administrative Code)
- Refuse to issue, deny, suspend, revoke, or place on probation a license or permit
- Prevent distribution of drugs or devices deemed unfit for use or dangerous to health
- Establish minimum standards of the physical characteristics of a pharmacy
- Subpoena witnesses and schedule and conduct hearings on behalf of the public
The board must adopt rules:
- For the competent practice of pharmacy
- For a pharmacist to counsel patients
- To ensure a pharmacist has an agreement for the return of expired legend drugs and controlled drugs
- For the electronic transmission of prescriptions
- For the OTC sale of ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine
The board shall assist in the rehabilitation of an impaired or a licensed pharmacist.

The board may designate a rehabilitation program to assist impaired pharmacists. This program shall:
- Immediately report to the board any pharmacist the program believes constitutes an imminent danger to the public or themselves
- Report in a timely manner any pharmacist who refuses to cooperate, submit to treatment, or is not substantially alleviated through treatment
Pharmacy intern definition
A person who
- permitted to practice under supervision of pharmacist
- student in college for pharmacy
- qualified applicant waiting for examination
- is participating in a residency or fellowship
Pharmacy technician definition
Who works under the pharmacist that assist in clinical activities that do not require professional judgement
Pharmacy intern licensure
- Actively enrolled in ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
- Has obtained a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee Certificate
- Or awaiting examination for lincensure as pharmacist
Registration is valid for 1 year
Pharmacy technician licensure
To apply for a technician license:
- 18 years old
- High school graduate or GED
- Not convicted of crime with direct bearing on practice (felony involving controlled substance)
Technician licenses expire biennially on June 30th of even numbered years
Direct Licensure as a pharmacy technician
- Graduated from a competency-based pharmacy technician education training program
- Completed an employer training program approved by the board
- Successfully passed Pharmacy Technician Certified Board (PTCB) Exam or other nationally recognized certification
Pharmacy Tech in training license
nonrenewable and expire 12 months after date of issuance
Initial Pharmacist Licensure
- 18 years old
- Not convicted for a crime with a direct bearing on pharmacy practice
- Graduated from an ACPE accredited US college or graduated from another program to obtain FPGECC
- Satisfactorily complete a board approved pharmacy intern program
Reciprocal Pharmacist Licensure
If you are already licensed in another state, the barriers to licensure are less:
- Must be registered with National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)
- Graduated from an ACPE accredited US college or graduated from another program and obtained an FPGECC
- Successfully completed an examination on federal statutes and regulations as well as Indiana Statutes and rules governing practice of pharmacy
Pharmacist licensure CE
- Pharmacist licenses expire biennially, on June 30th of even-numbered years. Pharmacists attest to completion of required CE.
- If not renewed, licenses are expired July 1st of even-numbered years. You cannot practice on an expired license.
Pharmacists Professional
Judgement
Pharmacists are immune to criminal prosecution if they act in good faith. Not in good faith:
- Be contrary to the law
- Be against the best interest of the patient
- Aid or abet an addiction or habit
- Be contrary to the health and safety of the patient
