ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
1988, No one shall be denied an opportunity because of a disability.

What defines a disability? (ADA)
Having an impairment that limits the individual in a certain activity, and having them experience discrimination
Labeling
Identifying someone who is outside of the norm
Disorder
disturbance in functioning
Disability
A loss of something, whether it be physical ability or social development
Handicap
Limitation imposed by the environment
Exceptional
Physical, mental, or behavioral performance that deviates so substantially from the norm (+ or -) that the individual needs additional support
Developmental Labeling
used by individuals in the field to determine an individual’s growth or progress
Cultural Labeling
Varying in the norms of a culture
Self-Labeling
How one perceives themselves, not how others see them. A person may be labeled by society, but not accept that label.
Separating the labels
Hard to separate the label and a person once they are affixed.
Environmental Bias
The environment in which observations are made can bias the perception of what is normal.

IEP
Individualized Education Program
Every student’s progress is calculated by their own standards. The IEP is a system of goals for each student.
IDEA
Once called EAHC, Free and appropriate education for all students, regardless of handicap
Zero-exclusion
No person of a disablilty can be rejected for a service, regardless of type or nature of it
General education
one size fits all, typical idea of education today, teaching for the masses
Special education
Individualized work with students, opportunities for each student’s potential to be tested individually
Multicultural Education
teaching everyone’s difference and embracing diversity
LRE
Least Restrictive Environment
Student is to be taught in an equal opportunity classroom, integrated with typical students
Nondiscriminatory assessment
Testing students in their primary tongue, with specific testing procedures
Parental involvement (IDEA)
Parents are given rights to influence their children’s education.
