exam Qs Flashcards
(10 cards)
State 2 common early symptoms of Lyme disease (2)
Higher temperatures
Muscle and joint pain
Explain how ELISA blood test helps in diagnosing Lyme disease (1 mark )
- ELISA detects antibodies specific to the bacteria causing Lyme disease
Suggest why antibiotics like doxycycline are used to treat Lyme disease and describe an alternative route if symptoms are severe (3 marks)
- doxycycline kills the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease
- prevents progression by inhibiting protein synthesis and spread of bacteria
- in severe cases, IV antibiotics are used for faster and more direct delivery
What causes EB and how is it inherited? (2 marks)
- caused by gene mutation that prevents skin layers (epidermis to dermis) from binding
- it is an inherited genetic disorder
Outline 2 common symptoms of EB and one diagnostic method (3 marks)
- skin blistering especially on hands and feet, thickened scarred skin
- diagnosis: skin biopsy taken by dermatologist to determine the type of severity
Describe 3 physical symptoms of anorexia (3)
- low BMI
- hair loss or dry skin
- feeling dizzy
Explain 2 mental health features of anorexia that affect diagnosis or treatment (4 marks)
- distorted body image leads to denial of illness, delaying diagnosis
- obsessive behaviour round door and exercise make treatment adherence difficult
Explain 2 methods to reduce risk of tick bites (3 marks)
- wear long clothing to reduced exposed skin
- use insect repellent on skin and clothes to repel ticks
Discuss the possible complications of untreated Lyme disease and how they are managed (6 marks)
- untreated Lyme disease can lead to joint pain and swelling, nerve dysfunction like numbness or pain and heart problems
- these complications are managed through antibiotics such as doxycycline or IV for severe cases
- pain relief like paracetamol may also be used to manage symptoms
Name 3 symptoms of EB
Thickened or scarred skin
Nail thickening
Blistering of skin
