What is the nephron?

A

The nephron is the functional unit of the kidneys, which consists of the bowmans capsule, and the renal tubule and their associated blood supply. Each kidney contains approximately 1 million nephrons.

What is the renal corpuscle?

A

This is where filtration takes places.
The renal corpuscle consists of the Bowmans capsule, and a mass of blood capillaries called the glomerulus.

Describe the flow of waste products in the glomerulus.

A

Afferent Arteriole -> Glomerulus -> Smaller molecules such as amino acids or glucose or ions are able to move through the endothelial cells, which are very fenestrated, allowing small molecules to pass through the walls of the vessel -> The smaller molecules are able to pass through the Basement membrane, while larger molecules such as RBC or proteins are unable to even if they pass through the Endothelial cells -> Epithelial Cells which alos enhance the filtration -> Efferent Arteriole -> Proximal Convolute Tubule.

Describe the Proximal Convolute Tubule.

A

This is the tube closest to the Bowman’s Capsule.
- Microvilli line the proximal tubule creating a brush lining which greatly increases the surface area for reabsorption.

A

Loop of Henle: Water (25%), Salts (25%).
