EXERCISE 5 Flashcards
Special Practices in Crop Production (13 cards)
Enclosing or wrapping fruits to protect from possible damage due to insects, diseases, winds, etc. (e.g. banana, mango, guava, macopa, jackfruit, ampalaya, cacao, and papaya)
Fruit Bagging
Removal of unnecessary suckers from the base to allow better growth of remaining sucker; to regulate the volume and schedule of production
Desuckering
Providing support to branches or stalk with heavy load of fruits; common propping materials are bamboo poles (V shape end tied together) e.g. mango, banana, pomelo
Propping
Growing of new crop out of the shoots arising from the previous crop; save time and reduce cost of production
e.g. sugarcane, pineapple, and rice
Ratooning
Way of producing fruits even during off-season; way profuse and uniform flowering
Flower induction
In flower induction, what kind of chemical is used for mango dark green leaves?
KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate)
In flower induction, what kind of chemical is used for Pineapple?
244 ppm Ethephon (Ethrel) mixed with 1% urea
Removal of some flowers or fruits to allow the remaining ones to increase in size
e.g. atis, jackfruit, watermelon, melon, grapes, durian, rose, chrysanthemum.
Thinning
Providing support to the plant so stem and leaves are kept from the ground; viny crops
e.g. cucumber, gourds, yam, grapes, passion fruit, tomato, vanilla, black pepper
Trellising
Very young suckers
Peeper sucker
What kind of sucker is sword-shaped, attached to the mother plant, tapered, follower?
Sword sucker
What kind of sucker are broad leaves, not tapered, superficially attached to mother plant, not follower?
Water sucker
What does perforations do?
Provide aeration and humidity and temperature regulation
