Exercise and the skeleton Flashcards
(6 cards)
How do bones respond to exercise?
- Evolution
- loading increases mass, disuse reduces mass
- architectural changes
- site specific
What do bones do?
Protect vital soft organs, allow muscles to work, store mineral
What to tendons do?
Tough fibrous connective tissue, attaches muscle to bone and can withstand tension (collagen)
(contains golgi apparatus in the junction near the muscle)
Histologically, tendons consist of dense regular connective tissue fascicles encased in dense irregular connective tissue sheaths.
What do ligaments do?
Tough fibrous connective tissue, attaches bone to bone (like to like) (collagen)
“Ligament” most commonly refers to a band of dense regular connective tissue bundles made of collagenous fibers, with bundles protected by dense irregular connective tissue sheaths
Strain under pressure - then go back to original shape/length, not when strained for long amount of time (dislocated joints)
What can affect bone mass increase
Age, gender, genotype, diet, environment
What do fasciae do?
Connect muscle to muscle
