Experiment 4 Flashcards
(11 cards)
An acid is a proton ______
Donor
A base is a proton ______
Acceptor
What is he product of a reaction of an acid with a base?
A salt
Example of acid
Example of base
Acid- HNO3
Base- NaOH
In which solution is phenolphthalein colourless? Pink?
Colourless- acidic solution
Pink- basic solution
What are the two volumetric primary standards?
Benzoic acid- C6H5COOH
Phthalic acid- KC8H5O4
How do we accurately determine the mass of a base in a solution?
Put in a volumetric primary standard like KHP (KC8H5O4) and have the mole ratio at one to one with the base and use that to find the moles of the base and then mass
How is vinegar produced?
Commercially by a bacterial oxidation of a dilute aqueous solution of ethanol
How much acetic acid does household vinegar contain? Pickling vinegar?
Household- 5% CH3COOH by volume
Pickling- 7% CH3COOH by volume
How do you find the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar?
Titrate a known volume of the vi what solution with a standardized aqueous solution oh NaOH
This has molar ratio of 1:1 so use that to find the moles
What is the overall reaction for the determination of the acetic acid content of the vinegar
CH3COOH(aq) + NaOH(aq)-> CH3COO-Na+(aq) + H2O (l)
