What is an independent groups design?
Experiment where different participants measure different conditions of the independent variable
What are the advantages of independent groups designs?
No exercise effect as bothh groups have different participants, meaning they neither improve nor worsen
What are the disadvantages of repeated measures designs?
Participant variables are not controlled, and it requires more participants
What is a repeated measures design?
Experiment where the same participants are measured in different conditions of the independent variable
What are the advantages of repeated measures designs?
No difference in the participants, and fewer participants are required
What are the disadvantages of repeated measures designs?
Practice effect is present, as the same participants are used in both groups, meaning they can improve or worsen
What is a matched pairs design?
Participants are measured before the start of the research, where they are then matched based on the behaviour/skill that was measured
What are the advantages of matched paris designs?
No difference in participants as they are paired with someone that performs similarly to them, and there are no practice effects as participants in both conditions are different
What are the disadvantages of matched pairs designs?
Greater number of participants are needed, as each participant is only used once and it is likely that certain participant characteristics make it impossible to match them
