Experimental Design Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an independent group design?
Using participants in different each condition of the experiment sothat a participant only experiences one condition. The participants can be randomly allocated to each of the condition.
What is one strength of using independent group as an experimental design ?
P - no order effects
E - participants only tested once
E - controls CV
What is another strength of using independent groups as an experimental design ?
P - will not guess aim
E - only tested once so hard to guess
E - behaviour more natural (higher realism)
What is one limitation of using independent groups as an experimental design ?
P - participants variables
E - participants in 2 groups different so EV/CV
E - reduce validity
What is another limitation of using indepdent groups as an experimental design ?
P - less economical
E - need 2x participants
E - more time recruiting = expensive
What is a repeated measures design ?
Using the same participants in each condition of the experiment so that every participant experiences both conditions
What is one strength of using repeated measures design as an experimental design ?
P - no participant variables
E - person in not conditions has same characteristics
E - controls important CV
What is another strength of using repeated measures design as an experimental design ?
P - fewer participants
E - half no of participants needed
E - less time spent recruiting
What is one limitation of using repeated measures design as an experimental design ?
P - order effects are a problem
E - participants are repeating experiment so may get better or boxed
E - reduces validity results
What is another limitation of using repeated measures design as an experimental design ?
P - participants guess aims
E - may change behaviour
E - reduces validity
What are matched pairs as an experimental design ?
Using different, but similar participants in each condition of the experiment so that an effort is made to match the participants in each condition based on important variables such as age, sex, ability etc.
What is one strength of using matched pairs as an experimental design ?
P - no order effects
E - participants only tested once
E - enhances validity results
What is one strength of using matched pairs as an experimental design ?
P - matching is difficult / not perfect
E - is time-consuming + hard to control all variables
E - can’t address all participant variables
