theory
Introduction:
Assimilation is a form of acculturation where individuals adopt the cultural norms and practices of the dominant society, often leading to a reduction in their original cultural identity.
aim
Lueck and Wilson (2010) conducted a study which aimed to investigate the factors that affect acculturative stress among Asian Americans and Asian immigrants in the United States
sample
The sample consisted of 2095 Asian Americans, both immigrants and US-born, from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds.
Procedure
Procedure:
Semi structured interviews
They measured participants’ level of acculturative stress, impact of variables on it (language proficiency, discrimination, social networks, economic status, family dynamics …)
Results:
70% had acculturative stress
lower stress:
bilingual proficiency (mastered the language)
economic stability
strong family ties and social networks
higher stress:
language barrier
experienced discrimination, neg. treatment
struggled with economic difficulties
link
Acculturation of immigrants results in acculturative stress
- study demonstrates the complexities of acculturation and how it impacts mental health - includes participants that had to adapt to a new culture (acculturation is demonstrated)
shows that successful integration into a new culture involves a balance between maintaining aspects of one’s original culture by keeping strong family ties and adapting to the host culture by learning the language - those factors greatly reduced acculturative stress in participants
language barrier and discrimination - higher stress
