The main purpose was to raid spanish colonies and to look for opputunities for English colonisation and trade

It almost ended in disaster as 4 ships were lost but Drake made it back.
They had made huge amounts of money (500m in todays money),
Drake became rich and famous,
Great boost to English moral and reputation
Serverely damaged relations with Spain
