1

What are some of the key techniques used in exploring the genome?

  • Restriction-enzyme analysis
  • Blotting techniques
  • DNA sequencing
  • Solid-phase synthesis of nucleic acids
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

2

What are restriction enzymes and how can they be used by scientists?

Enzymes that recognise specific base sequences in double-helical DNA and cleave, at specific places, both strand of that duplex.

Scientists can exploit this and cleave DNA into specified fragments that can be analysed.

3

Restricton enzymes cleave what kind of sequences?

Palindromic sequences
