how does structure show high alert
each stanza begins with a blunt and powerful sentence, these sentences are then followed by highly emotive vocabulary choices. each stanza ending with an anticlimax - the way in which the first 4 lines build up a rhyme pattern, only for it to be broken down by the final line shows the build up of adrenaline and anticipation of battle which is never realised.
repetitive rhyme scheme shows the repetitive events the soldiers are suffering through
our brains ache in the
merciless iced east winds that knive us - personification of the winds as merciless and kiniving soldiers converys nature as an additional memory
but nothing happens
