Whats the context on owen
Owen wrote the poem while in the trenches he wrote it to express the horrors of war opposed to internalising it.Inspired by writers like Sasoon who critiqued patriotism and had extreme patriotism attitudes.
“Dawn massing in the east her melancholy army”
The use of personification of “dawn” being belligerent and systematic violent army juxtaposes traditional views of mother Nature as nurturing. The irony of “dawn” typically is used as a symbol of renewal
“We turn back our dying to our dying” “for love of god seems dying”
Semantic field of death and decay fear is absent replaced instead by a sense of grim defeat-the soldiers have learned to accept the inevitability of death, having constantly waiting for it.Dehumanised by the war.
Whats the form
Pararhyme such as “knife us” “nervous” evoke a sense of unease and dissatisfaction in the reader,as they anticipate a full rhyme but are constantly denied this mirrors the solders anxious and anticipation of conflict their minds are unsettled by the nervous tension of waiting battle.
