A
  • Jargon helps you feel more included and bonds members within a group
  • Using it shows you’re part of a discourse community
  • However, this goes both ways, and it also plays an exclusionary role

Q

Amanda Cole and Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade

A
  • Compared Haagse Harry with British chavs
  • Chavs are consistently conveyed in English media as not speaking clearly/articulately and portrayals of them show inherent bias towards working class
  • However, Haagse Harry is the Dutch equivalent of a fictional chav (like Vicky Pollard) and his accent has much more positive connotations.
  • Haagse Harry speaks Broad Haags which has been codified and is used in local adverts, publications and songs
  • Shows how much enregisterment in society influences accent bias
