Red flag symptoms for conjunctivitis?
Soft contact lens wearer
Painful eye movements
Photophobia
Impaired vision
Pregnant/breastfeeding
Symtpoms of conjunctivitis
Discharge from eyes
Eyes stuck together in the morning
Gritty feeling in the eye
Sudden onset
Chloramphenicol method of administration
Give 1 drop 2 hourly for 48 hours then 4 times a day for 5 days
Advice to be given if selling the chlorampheicol ointment
Can blur vision- avoid driving
Age limit on chloramphenicol eye drops?
2+ years- can cause grey baby syndrome in <2
2nd line for conjunctivitis?
Fusidic acid 1% eye drops- BD for 7 days
Action if uveitis is suspected?
Urgent referral
Action if no improvement within 48 hours of treatment for conjunctivitis?
Refer
Symptoms of blepharitis
Eyelash loss/ crusting
Inflamed/sore eyelids (both eyes)
Blurry vision
Dry, gritty eyes
1st line treatment for blepharitis
Eyelid hygiene- warm compress to eyelids for 5-10 minutes twice daily, dropping to once daily.
Lid massage
Advice for treatment of stye OTC
Warm flannel applied for 5-10 minutes 2-4 times daily
What drops are licensed for stye treatment OTC?
Propamidine isethionate (Golden eye and brolene)
NOT chloramphenicol
Propamidine isethionate age limit?
> 12 years old OTC
Sodium cromoglycate age limit
No age limit stipulated
What clinical assessment may need to be carried out in sub-conjunctival haemorrhage?
Blood pressure check
What age group is dry eye more common in?
50+
1st line therapy for dry eye?
Hypromellose 0.3% eye drops or lubricants
When are lubricants best applied?
At night as can cause blurry vision
Preservative that can cause ocular irritation?
Benzalkonium Hexachloride
When should PF hypromellose be considered?
If using 6+ times daily as benzalkonium hexachloride can cause irritation
