Fabric Finishes Flashcards
(11 cards)
List 3 types of physical fabric finish and explain what each one is.
Stonewashing - putting a strong cotton denim fabric into a large drum and rolling it around with pumice stones to distress the colour eg stone washed jeans
Brushing – putting a fabric bolt through the machine that will run a wire brush over the surface to lift up the fibres on one side to create a softer fluffy handle to trap air, Eg, baby’s / elderly’s clothing, sheets, pyjamas
Calendering- putting a bolt of fabric through a series of heated rollers under pressure to smooth and give a sheen to the fabric eg used for tablecloths etc
What is chemical fabric finishing?
Chemical finishing can be defined as the use of chemicals to achieve a desired fabric property.
Are all chemical fabric finishes permanent?
Some chemical finishes are permanent and some will last only a few washes / wears then need to be reapplied to the surface of the garment. Non permanent finishes can be done at home usually with a chemical spray eg water repellent for tents, rain jackets etc
What are the benefits of chemical fabric finishes (function finishes)?
Function finishes improve the performance of properties of the fabric like durability and strength
List as many chemical fabric finishes as you can.
Antimicrobial/Antiseptic
Crease resistant
Durable Press
Flame Resistant
Mothproof
Shrinkage Contro
Stain resistant
Soil Release
Waterproof/Repellant
Colour fastness
What are the benefits of chemical fabric finishes?
Make the garment look neater
Save time for the wearer
Keep the person wearing more comfortable
Make the laundering process easier, less time consuming
What are the disadvantages?
Have to be applied after so many washes, costing money
Change the texture of the fabric / stiffer
Costs money in processing
What is a performance fabric?
Performance fabric - a fabric designed for specific properties to support performance, i.e. designed to be;
moisture-wicking
anti-microbial
water-resistant
This fabric is engineered to withstand the toughest kind of wear and tear, is durable, and enhances comfort.
Most are constructed from synthetic yarns like polyester, acrylic and nylon.
Give me some examples of performance fabrics
Gore tex - highly waterproof
Lycra - (made from elastane) extremely stretchy and form fitting
Thermochromic - a fabric that uses a specific type of dye to react to particular temperature conditions
UV Reactive (sunlight) - a fabric that uses photochromic dyes that react to UV light found in sunlight. The dye will absorb the UV light and change colour temporarily to alert the wearer
UV Protective (sunlight) - a fabric that provides a higher UPF or UV protection for skin. The fabric is made of a much tighter weave than standard fabrics
What information do all textiles legally have to be labelled with and why?
Fibre content - incase consumers have allergies to certain fibres
Laundering instructions (wash/dry/iron) - how to look after the item to keep it looking its best (this will include temperatures for washing, drying method and noniron/iron temp)
