Knitted V Woven Flashcards
(10 cards)
How are woven textiles made?
woven on a loom
warp threads are held under tension and the weft thread is woven between them, creating the patterns and design in the weave.
How do you stop woven fabric fraying?
creating seams
overlocking
What are the PRO’s of woven fabric?
Stable - less likely to shrink and don’t need reshaped
Durable - more robust as a fabric also it keeps shape better over time
Less moisture absorption due to tighter weave - can be good for wicking moisture away
Air permeability - good - less holes due to weaving process - wind and rain repellant
What are the CON’s of woven fabric?
Not great elasticity
More creasing
Higher production costs due to tighter weave and machinery involved
How is knitted textiles made?
Knitted fabrics are created by interlocking loops of yarn over each other
What is weft knitting?
Created by looping long lengths of yarn together; if a stitch is dropped, it will cause a ladder to run down the length of the fabric; used in socks, tights and jumpers
What is warp knitting?
Created by a knitting machine interlocking the yarn along the length of the fabric; as a result, they do not ladder; used in swimwear, underwear and geotextiles
What are the CON’s of knitted fabric?
Will stretch easily, garments can lose their shape
Not as strong and durable as woven fabrics, can wear out more quickly
Can snag, ladder and curl up
What are the PRO’s of woven fabric?
More breathable due to open loop structure
Wrinkle resistant, easy to launder (wash & dry)
More cost effective due to simpler/quicker production processes
Used in athletic clothing due to stretch & flexibility
Can feel soft, comfortable and form hugging
Is wool always knitted?
No wool can be woven or knitted as can most other fibres.
